Matera: Natural caves attracted the first inhabitants about 9000 years ago, where the first human settlement were built. More elaborate structures were built atop them. Today, looking across the gorge to Matera’s cave dwellings it seems you've been transported back to the ancient Holy Land. Indeed, the underground city has often been used for biblical scenes in films and TV. in 2004, it was Mel Gibson with The Passion of the Christ. In 2015, the new Ben Hur rolled through Matera. Its caves are filled with restaurants, bars, hotels and souvenir stores, and the city is a Hollywood darling. In 2019, it will take center stage as Europe's Capital of Culture.
Bari: Is the capital of southern Italy’s Puglia region. Its maze like old town occupies a headland between 2 harbors. Surrounded by narrow streets, the 11th-century Basilica di San Nicola, a key pilgrimage site, holds some of St. Nicholas’ remains. To the south, the Murat quarter has stately 19th-century architecture, a promenade and pedestrianized shopping areas.
